The acceptance of nominations for 93 local government bodies for the upcoming local government elections will commence from today.
The National Elections Commission says the process will conclude at 12 noon on the 14th of this month.
The Commission added that District selection officers will thereafter officially announce the date for the polls to be held.
Special security plans are to be implemented in and around the elections commission offices in each district during the acceptance of nominations.
Meanwhile, political parties are gearing up to face the upcoming elections.
Sri Lanka Freedom Party MP and Deputy Minister Lasantha Alagiyawanna told News 24, nominations will be handed over in the Gampaha District initially, while discussions are underway with regard to the remaining districts.
United National Party MP and Deputy Minister Ashok Abeysinghe says discussions are still underway and the list of candidates contesting the election will be finalised soon.
Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna MP Dr. Nalinda Jayatissa said members from the party are set to hand in their nominations in a number of districts today.
And Sri Lanka Podu Jana Peramuna MP Shehan Semasinghe said as there is a division among the two main parties forming the government, the Joint Opposition party will contest as a separate party and will win the election.
