United People’s Freedom Alliance Digamadulla MP Sriyani Wijewickrama who represented the joint opposition pledged her support to President Maithripala Sirisena last evening.
The President’s Media confirmed that the MP had met President Sirisena last evening at his official residence in Colombo and vowed to support his ongoing programme.
Speaking to News 24, Deputy Minister of Finance Lasantha Aligiyawanna says discussions are underway with more members of the Joint Opposition Party, who intend to cross over to the government in the near future.
The Deputy Minister said the government welcomes MP Wijewickrama’s decision and hinted of more cross overs in the days leading up to the election.
Meanwhile, Joint Opposition MP Shehan Semasinghe said his party had no issues with MP Wijewickrama supporting President Sirisena, but the issue was with her allegiance to the United National Party.
