Joint Opposition MP Wimalaweera Dissanayake has challenged State Minister of Local Government and Provincial Councils Sriyani Wijewickrama to win at least one seat in the Ampara District in the upcoming local government elections.
Wijewickrama, who crossed over from the Joint Opposition Party, pledged support to President Maithripala Sirisena last month, and was later appointed as the State Minister of Local Government and Provincial Councils.
She had earlier accused MP Dissanayake of being backed by Former Minister Basil Rajapaksa to destabilise the current government.
Responding to her accusation, MP Dissanayake challenged Wijewickrama to win at least one out of 20 local government institutions in the Ampara District.
He added that in the event Wijewickrama wins the challenge, he will resign from his post.
