A group of MPs representing the Joint Opposition presented a request to the Speaker to hold a debate on the current political situation in the country.
The request was signed by 20 Joint Opposition Mps.
Speaker Karu Jayasuriya suspended the Parliamentary sittings for 15 mins and held a party leaders meeting to discuss the request.
Upon discussions, party leaders agreed to hold an adjournment debate on the current political situation and conduct the sittings till 7 pm today.
Today was the first day the legislature met following the government's defeat at the Local Government election which resulted in a political deadlock.
