A Sri Lankan delegation that had left to The United Arab Emirates to arrest former Sri Lankan Ambassador to Russia Udayanga Weeratunga has returned to the island.
Last week, INTERPOL issued a ‘Red Warrant' on Weeratunga, naming him as a fugitive wanted by the Sri Lankan authorities.
Weeratunga is wanted in connection with certain discrepancies that had taken place in the acquisition of four MiG-27 fighter jets from an Ukrainian arms company in 2006 and financial misappropriation said to have taken place in overhauling four MiG fighter jets owned by the Air Force.
However, the Sri Lankan delegation consisting of the Solicitor General of Sri Lanka Yasantha Kodagoda and Director of the Financial Crimes Investigation Division Senior Superintendent P.K.D. Priyantha had held discussions with UAE officials, as well the nation’s Attorney General in this regard.
But as they had failed to determine Weeratunga’s whereabouts, the Sri Lankan delegation has now returned to the island.
