The US State Department has issued a statement calling on President Maithripala Sirisena to immediately reconvene Parliament in consultation with the Speaker.
It has asked the President to allow the 'democratically elected representatives of the people of Sri Lanka to fulfil their responsibility to affirm who will lead their government.'
Heather Nauert, Spokesperson for the US State Department said the US was continuing to 'closely monitor the situation in Sri Lanka'.
'We urge all sides to refrain from intimidation and violence', the statement further said.
